At Red River Hardscapes, we manufacture our pavers and retaining wall products by replacing a percentage of cement with a recycled supplementary material called Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS). GGBFS is a by-product of the steel industry and has been used for over 100 years to improve durability and reduce the lifecycle costs of concrete. There are many advantages to using products containing GGBFS:
- Using GGBFS recovers materials that would be disposed of in landfills.
- GGBFS increases structure life by producing higher compressive and flexural strengths, reduced permeability and increased resistance to aggressive chemicals.
- GGBFS also helps reduce efflorescence, or mineral leaching, in concrete.
- GGBFS results in a decrease in manufacturing energy and greenhouse gasses.
The U.S. Green Building Council suggests using GGBFS in concrete to achieve points in the LEED®-NC system.
